Banded iron formations are of economic interest as they host the world’s largest iron ore deposits and many gold deposits. Algoma-type banded iron formations were deposited as chemical sediments along with other sedimentary rocks (such as greywacke and shale) and volcanics in and adjacent to volcanic arcs and spreading centers. Geology of iron deposits in Canada. [Ottawa] Dept. of Mines and Technical Surveys, Canada [ Regional and stratiform metamorphic skarn deposits include, for example, skarn iron deposits that were derived from iron-rich sedimentary and volcanic rocks by recrystallization, isochemical meta-morphism, and bimetasomatism.

Recrystallization, in particular, results in upgrading the quality of ore for concentration, beneficiation. The iron- and titanium-rich deposits are classified as two subtypes on the basis of the principal ore minerals and the petrology of the host intrusions.

The proportions of the principal ore minerals vary from ilmenite-dominant in anorthosite host rocks to titaniferous magnetite-dominant in gabbro and leucogabbro host rocks. Book - Geology of Iron Deposits in Canada V.2 Iron Deposits in the Appalachian and Grenville Regions of Canada, p.

The Red Lake gold range, in Ontario, is continued westward in Manitoba. Northwest of Lake Winnipeg, a gold range begins at Wekusko Lake, and continues westward to and into Saskatchewan.

Uranium deposits formed at nearly all steps of the geological cycle, from high-grade metamorphic conditions (up to °C and 5–7 kbar) for the uranothorianite pyroxenite deposits from the Tranomaro area in the southern part of Madagascar, to plutonic, metasomatic, hydrothermal, basinal diagenetic, metamorphic, Cited by: 6.

Banded iron formations are critical to our current economy as they are by far the biggest source of economic iron deposits. China and Australia are the world’s largest iron producers, and both have enormous reserves of BIFs. Smaller deposits are mined elsewhere including the USA and Canada.

Metal Deposits Mining has always been a major part of Canada’s economy. Canada has some of the largest mining districts and deposits in the world, and for the past years, we have been one of the most important suppliers of metals. Archaean gold deposits account for more than 60% of the world's gold. Over 60% of this comes from the Witwatersrand of South Africa (a hydrothermally remobilised palaeo-placer gold deposit) and the remainder from Archaean lode gold deposits in Australia, Canada, southern Africa and South America.

Mineral resource assessments provide a synthesis of available information about where mineral deposits are known and suspected to be in the Earth’s crust, which commodities may be present, and estimates of amounts of resources that may be present in undiscovered deposits.
